Born on the 12th of December, Maryam Uwais is a Nigerian entrepreneur, legal practitioner and human rights activist.She has over 36 years cognate law practice experience and is currently the Special Advisor to the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Social Investments.
The SA studied Law at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, got into the Nigerian bar in the year 1981. In the year 1985, she obtained her LLM.
Same 1985, Mrs Uwais was awarded a certificate in Advanced Practice and Procedure. She got another certificate in Legal Drafting in 1989.
She served as a Principal Partner of an Abuja-based law firm, Wali Uwais & Co. Prior to that, she had served on the Council of the National Human Rights Commission.
Mrs Uwais also served on state, federal and continental committees such as The Kano State Almajiri Committee, President Goodluck Johnathan’s Presidential Advisory Council.
She is the founder of the Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative which targets the conditions of women and children in education, healthcare and empowerment.
She has worked as a as a consultant to the Open Society Initiative for West Africa, the World Bank, UNICEF and DfID.
Her published works center on economic and social rights, good governance, interfaith dialogue, social rights and child justice administration.
Maryam Uwais was a Member of Board of Directors of Stanbic IBTC Holdings PLC. She was also a member of the Editorial Board of Thisday newspapers.
She is married to Justice Muhammed Uwais.
