Born on the 5th of May, 1961, Salawa Abeni is a Nigerian singer and songwriter.

She began her music career under the waka music in the 1970s. Her first album, Late General Murtala Ramat Mohammed was released in 1976 under the Leader Records.

It was the first recording by a Yoruba female artist to sell more than a million copies in Nigeria.

Abeni was crowned the 'Queen of Waka Music' in 1992 by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.

She continued recording songs under the Leader Records until year 1986. She ended a relationship with the owner of the record label, Lateef Adepoju, got married to Kollington Ayinla and joined his own label instead.

They were together till 1994.

The Waka music is a traditional Yoruba music style, much influenced by Islam and a bit older than other genres like the fuji and jùjú.

It was popularized by Batile Alake.
