Gov Uzodimma Appoints Prof Achinike As New IMSU VC
January 07, 2021Governor Hope Uzodimma has approved the appointment of Professor Peter Achinike Akah as the Vice-Chancellor of the Imo State University, Owerri. He will be replacing Prof. Adaobi Obasi, the first female VC of the institution who was reportedly sacked in December 2020.
The recent appointment is in accordance with the provision of the Law establishing the Imo State University, Owerri.
About Professor Peter Achinike Akah
Peter Achinike Akah holds a (PhD Pharmacology) from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He joined the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, as a Faculty member in October 1984 and was promoted to the rank of Professor of Pharmacology in October 1995.He was the former Associate Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies and Dean Student Affairs UNN and has also served as the Head of Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.
Prof. Akah has since 2006, been an and Head Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, College of Medicine, Imo State University. He has also been a permanent member of the Senate of UNN since 1995, and a member of many faculty and university committees. He was a one-time Visiting Professor at the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), Abuja, (1994-2000).
He has served as an adjunct professor of Pharmacology at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, and University of Uyo, Uyo, as well as a Consultant Pharmacologist to UNDP, NAFDAC and NIPRD.
Prof Achinike has published more than 200 papers and 5 books and 21 book chapters in his subject area and has presented more than 50 papers in many national and international conferences.
Achinike is a member of the Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria (IPAN) and a Fellow of the Academy of Science (FAS). He belongs to many learned scientific and professional associations.
