The account stated that while the ISWAP delegation expected Shekau to issue a statement, the factional Boko Haram leader who secretly had a suicide vest on eventually blew himself up alongside everyone present during the negotiations. 

Another account alleged that a rival terrorist group, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), invaded Shekau’s stronghold in Sambisa Forest and killed him.

Both unverified reports have sparked massive reactions on Twitter. While many are excited over the news, some other Twitter users are yet to decide their stand, at least until the news is verified.

This isn't the first time the news of Shekau's death is making news. In 2009, it was reported that Shekau was killed during clashes between Nigeria's security forces and Boko Haram.

In September 2014, the Nigerian army stated that Shekau has been killed, this time by the Cameroonian military, during a Boko Haram attempt to capture Kodunga, a small village north of Maiduguri.

In August 2015, Chadian President Idriss Deby asserted that Boko Haram had been decapitated and Shekau replaced by a new leader.
