Dr. Yusuf Datti Ahmed is a Nigerian politician and economist. He was announced as the running mate to Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 elections. Dr. Ahmed served as a member of the House of Representatives representing Zaria from 2003 to 2007 and in the Senate for Kaduna North from 2011 to 2012. Dr. Yusuf Datti Ahmed was born to the Baba-Ahmed family in Zaria. His father was an Arab cattle trader and had 33 children. His father later became a notable professor and expert on Islamic jurisprudence.
Dr. Yusuf Datti Ahmed holds a BSc and MSc in Economics from the University of Maiduguri in Borno State. In 2006, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the prestigious University of Westminster, London, England.
Career and Politics
Prior to venturing into politics, Dr. Ahmed worked in the security Printing and Minting, Lagos.
In April 2003, he was elected to the Federal House of Representatives for the Zaria Federal Constituency, Kaduna State. He ran on the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) platform.
In the April 2011 elections, he polled 366,398 votes in the contest for Senator for Kaduna North. He defeated the incumbent, Senator Ahmed Makarfi of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 365,043 votes. The electoral tribunal overturned his victory and he left office in 2012.
Yusuf Datti Ahmed is the founder and Pro-chancellor of Baze University Abuja and the Baze University Hospital which is said to be the biggest private hospital in Africa today.
